Join us as a distinguished panel of scholars reflects on the presentations of God in Jewish sources, ancient, medieval, and modern.

Presenters will include:

Dr. Rachel Adelman, Hebrew College
Dr. Daniel Rynhold, Yeshiva University
Dr. Sharon Korn, Hebrew Union College
Dr. Claire Sufrin, Northwestern University
Moderator, Rabbi Or Rose, Center for Global Judaism, Hebrew College
Respondent, Prof. Phil Lieberman, Vanderbilt University

Refreshments will be provided!!

<description>The Vanderbilt University Center for Technology Transfer &#x26; Commercialization (CTTC), in partnership with LaunchTennessee, will host an SBIR / STTR Workshop, Tuesday, May 21 from 9:30 am to noon at Vanderbilt School of Engineering, in Stevenson 5326.
PURPOSE: Create awareness among faculty and students of the funding available from the various federal agencies for Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs and discuss key issues with attracting the grant.
SBIR / STTR PROGRAM: The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is a competitive but growing program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in Research/Research and Development (R/R&#x26;D) that has the potential for commercialization. Through a competitive awards-based program, SBIR enables small businesses to explore their technological potential and provides the incentive to profit from its commercialization. By including qualified small businesses in the nation's R&#x26;D arena, high-tech innovation is stimulated and the United States gains entrepreneurial spirit as it meets its specific research and development needs.
Presenter: Mark H. Henry, Founder of Grow Emerging Companies LLC, is a nationally known expert in the $2.5 billion federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. Mark has over 30 years of experience in helping innovative small firms across the country win hundreds of seed-level SBIR/STTR government R&#x26;D grants and contracts--early-stage, non-dilutive awards totaling some $500 million.

Probing Deep into the Fabric of Space and Time: The Discovery and Latest Results on the Higgs Boson
Professor Joe Incandela, Leader (Spokesperson) of the CMS Experiment, University of California Santa Barbara/CERN

ABSTRACT: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European laboratory for nuclear research (CERN) near Geneva Switzerland performed spectacularly well in its first running period from December 2009 through February 2013. Data of unprecedented quality and quantity have been recorded for proton-proton collisions at energies of 7 and 8 Trillion electron Volts - the highest energies ever. In this lecture, Joe Incandela will give an overview of the decades-long, worldwide effort to construct and operate the LHC accelerator and the ATLAS and CMS experiments that together represent the largest, most complex system ever built for physics research. The science program will be reviewed with emphasis on the Higgs boson whose role in our universe is profound, and whose properties may have extraordinary implications.
Highlights from the discovery announced July 4th will be shown, followed by recent results obtained with much more data.

Concerts take place rain or shine. They will only be cancelled with the threat of tornado or severe lightning. No exchange, no refunds, no reentry. Visit the Dyer Observatory website for additional information.

2013 Bluebird on the Mountain at Dyer Observatory: May 18, June 8, July 20, August 17, September 21, and October 5.

Thanks to Amy Kurland and Erika Wollam-Nichols of the Bluebird Cafe fame, we are producing a series of in-the-round style events that have been absolutely wonderful. The performers have included the top songwriters in Nashville. In 2013, we celebrate our 10th cooperative Bluebird concert season in May and continue monthly through October. We encourage carloads of people to attend by purchasing a &#x22;carload ticket.&#x22; Bring up to 8 people in your car. No RVs please.

Four Hundred Years of British Art: Highlights from the Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery Collection
Summer Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Friday, noon to 4 p.m. ; Saturday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and closed Sunday and Monday
British art constitutes an important part of the Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery's collections. This comprehensive survey will be the first of its kind in over two decades to draw on the nearly 300 British objects held by the Gallery. Four Hundred Years of British Art will include examples of eighteenth-century English portraiture by such noted artists as Benjamin Wilson and George Romney, along with a work attributed to the school of Sir Thomas Lawrence; a selection of engravings by the pictorial satirist and social critic William Hogarth; two biting satires of the English upper class by Thomas Rowlandson; early nineteenth-century prints by Joseph Mallord William Turner, and the master mezzotint printmaker Richard Earlom; paintings from the founder of the Norwich School of landscape painting, John Chrome; several examples of works by artists associated with the late-nineteenth-century etching revival such as Richard Samuel Chattock, Sir Francis Seymour Haden and Samuel Palmer; selections from the Gallery&#x26;iacute;s large collection of etchings by one of the premier portraitists of the early twentieth century, Gerald Brockhurst; and modern and contemporary works by noted artists such as Patrick Caulfield, Bernard Cohen, Michael Craig-Martin, Lesley Foxcroft, Elisabeth Frink, Mona Hatoum, David Hockney, Henry Moore, and Roland Penrose.

Four Hundred Years of British Art is organized by the Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery and curated by Joseph Mella, director. The exhibition will feature the research and writing of Fine Arts Gallery interns Caroline Passano and Emma Trawick. Four Hundred Years of British Art is also being presented in honor of Professor Robert L. Mode, who will retire after forty-six years of teaching art history at Vanderbilt. Much of his research and teaching focused on British art.

The focus of Vanderbilt Dyer Observatory's camp is astronomy and space science. The camp curriculum is a mix of presentations and exciting hands-on activities created by an expert team of astronomy professors, space scientists, and area science teachers.
Campers learn about the universe; from exotic black holes to the nature of light. During the week campers are engaged in hands-on educational and exiting science activities: working with electronics, designing Martian- and lunar-landers, experimenting with lasers, and participating telescope control and observations.
Each day is infused with cutting-edge NASA innovations and programs. The Dyer Observers Space Science Camp supports students who are serious about science in their exploration of the worlds of science, math and technology, and opens up their minds to future career possibilities in these fields. Campers interact with astronomers who are respected researchers and seasoned instructors. Participation in group activities builds self-confidence, problem solving skills and social skills.

Oct. 3-4
Vanderbilt University's Center for Medicine, Health &#x26; Society (MHS) hosts &#x22;The Politics of Health,&#x22; a two-day that conference explores political exigencies of health in the US and around the world. The conference invites participants and attendees with a range of priorities, experiences, and expertise to a conversation about the paradoxes and the promises of health.
Health is a political object par excellence: everyone agrees on its fundamental importance. Yet there is widespread disagreement about what health consist of, who needs it, and how we can equitably share it. American politicians and communities spent the last two years arguing over whether a national healthcare system was a moral necessity or an egregious governmental overreach. The business of health has made a dizzying array of technologies and treatments available across the globe, but as a result health has also into a commodity available only to some. Political, social and environmental issues - war, gun control, climate change, food security, discrimination - are increasingly understood in terms of their health effects, but their practical and social dimensions remain no less complex. Health is not just a state to strive for or a quantity we can posses, then, but a lens that reveals contention, suffering, and the possibility of better lives. Health, that is to say, is political.

The conference is organized around four themes that speak to the scale, urgency and intimacy of health as a political problem: inequality, activism, policy, and aesthetics. Discussions will build on the observation that health is a crucial resource, but it is almost never equitably distributed. A panel on racial inequality will take on the persistent causes and consequences of health disparities, and a panel on activism will consider the possibilities for health justice in settings of scarce money, time and attention. These inequalities are shaped by forces that can feel far removed from our everyday experience, despite the physical immediacy and personal nature of health. A panel on health policy will probe both the present and future of how health care is legislated and delivered, and a panel on aesthetics will examine how seemingly distant economic and legal decisions about health are materialized in our everyday physical, social, and natural environments. By opening the discussion to practitioners, scholars, activists, students, and community members, we aim to address health issues as they are now understood by a wide variety of stakeholders: not as a condition or an abstract object, but as an ongoing political project.
