SUMMARY:Patient Safety Seminar\: "Integration of an Advanced Training Center into the Hospital Quality System"
DESCRIPTION:As Quality and Patient Safety Officer for Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC)\, George Blike will discuss the theoretical rationale for integrating advanced training facilities into today's healthcare facilities.\n\nA close look at &quot\;learning curve error&quot\; suggests we need to change our emphasis on who are our learners and rethink optimal strategies for achieving the quality and patient safety goals within a modern hospital. He will also share practical insights into how to drive a quality and patient safety agenda using in-situ simulation as a catalyst.\n\nDr. Blike is currently the Chief Patient Safety Officer at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at the Dartmouth Medical School. He is a founding member of the International Society for Medical Simulation and the chair for the DHMC Simulation Program. Dr. Blike's research utilizes human factors engineering and ranges from basic cognitive systems research to organizational human factors. Organizationally\, he is examining the feasibility of implementing a comprehensive safety program at the hospital-wide level based upon approaches used in the aviation and nuclear power industries. All of his research strives to develop high-leverage countermeasures targeted to prevent\, limit\, or assure the tolerance of human/system failure thus making modern medical care safer for patients.\n\nSponsored by the Division of General Internal Medicine and Public Health&nbsp\;at Vanderbilt

SUMMARY:Event by Tom Sgouros and "Judy the Robot"
DESCRIPTION:Tom Sgouros has written and performed eight solo shows (almost all of which have premiered at Providence's Perishable Theatre). He has toured North America and Europe with Judy for five years\, performing at over 50 different universities\, and some theatres besides. His work has been funded by the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts\, the Rhode Island Committee on the Humanities\, and the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie-Mellon University.\nFor more information on Tom Sgouros' work link to http\://sgouros.com/.\n\n Sponsored by the Center for Ethics\n\n &quot\;Since the dawn of the computer age\, oceans of ink have been spilt writing about the intelligence of computers. Some researchers say that computers will eventually attain super-human intelligence. Others call these claims poppycock. Oddly\, in the search for the truth of the matter\, both camps have overlooked an obvious strategy\: interviewing a computer and asking its opinion. Intrepid researcher Sgouros has leapt into this lacuna\, and presents some preliminary findings in a new not-quite-solo show. (You could call it &quot\;My Dinner with Android.&quot\;) The central question is\: if you build a robot smart enough to do the dishes\, will it also be smart enough to find them boring?&quot\;\n\n Sgouros arrives with a full-fledged robot ready to engage in dialogue with him\, and the play lasts about 90 minutes. This play has received extremely favorably reviews over the past couple years since Sgouros began performing it at campuses and similar venues.\n\n Judy herself was built in Tom's basement\, over the course of several months\, from pieces of some old computers\, a couple of bicycles\, a copy machine\, marine stove\, and yes\, someone's kitchen sink. After literally weeks of intensive tutoring in phonics\, elocution\, and the elements of logic\, Judy made her public debut in January\, 2000\, at Providence's Perishable Theatre.\n\n Prof. Daniel Dennett of Tufts University had this to say about the show\:\n\n &quot\;Tom Sgouros's witty play\, co-starring the charming robot Judy\, is an imagination-stretcher that delights while it exercises your mind. If you think you can't imagine a conscious robot\, you're wrong -- you can\, especially once you've met Judy.&quot\;\n\n An Academic and Family Production Everyone will enjoy!\n May 13\, 2008 @ 7\:30 P.M.\n Wilson Hall\, Room 126 (Google map of this location)\n Free and Open to the Public

SUMMARY:Steve Martin's THE UNDERPANTS
DESCRIPTION:The Underpants\nby Steve Martin from the original play by Carl Sternheim Polk Theater\nDirected by Lane Davies Featuring Marin Miller\n6\:30 PM\, Thursdays\, May 1\, 8 and 15\n7\:30 PM\, Fridays and Saturdays\, May 2\, 9\, 10\, 16 and 17\n2\:30 PM\, Saturday\, May 17\n\nWhat does this season need after The Goat or\, Who Is Sylvia? and Doubt? A rollicking farce told with the wacky sensibility of the extremely funny Steve Martin! Yes\, THE Steve Martin. Critics love this show\: &quot\;An ambitious amalgam of comic book and social commentary\, made out of sex jokes\, slamming doors\, and sophisticated repartee.&quot\; The New York Times &quot\;A brilliant\, hilarious\, mad adaptation....&quot\; New York Post &quot\;Martin sprinkles the dialogue with endearing throwaways and demented turns of mind that could only have come from his singular playwrighting self.&quot\; Newsday &quot\;A careening combination sex farce\, comedy\, and social commentary -- light on its feet\, irreverent\, and quite engaging.&quot\; The Record What is The Big Laugh of 2008 about? On the surface\, The Underpants tells what happens when a pretty young woman married to a stuffy bureaucrat accidentally looses her intimate apparel while watching the king's parade. But underneath (no pun intended)\, The Underpants comments perceptively on our Celebrity-Mad Culture and the 15-minutes-make-that-seconds of fame syndrome. Who is that person on the cover of People I've never heard of? And what talent does he/she possess to justify this attention?\n\nAppropriate Audience\: High school and above. &nbsp\;\nTickets\: $10-$40 (some restrictions apply).
