SUMMARY:"The View from the Center of the Universe" a Talk by Joel Primack and Nancy Abrams
DESCRIPTION:\nScience is establishing the first well-tested cosmology in the history of humankind. The speakers\, authors of the book THE VIEW FROM THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE\, show how to visualize the universe&rsquo\;s key characteristics symbolically. Their lecture also includes beautiful astronomical videos. They illuminate the astonishing fact that we intelligent beings are turning out to be cosmically central or special\, based on fundamental principles of physics and cosmology. Becoming aware of our special place in the cosmos opens a sweeping new perspective on what we truly may be as humans and what we can do to resolve our personal and global challenges.&nbsp\;\n About the Speakers\:&nbsp\; Joel R. Primack\, Professor of Physics at the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, specializes in the formation and evolution of galaxies and the nature of the dark matter that makes up most of the matter in the universe. Primack received his A.B. from Princeton in 1966 and his Ph.D. from Stanford in 1970. After helping to create what is now called the &quot\;Standard Model&quot\; of particle physics\, Primack began working in cosmology in the late 1970s and he became a leader in the new field of particle astrophysics. He is one of the main originators and developers of the cold dark matter theory\, which has now become the standard theory of the origin and evolution of structure in the universe.&nbsp\; Nancy Ellen Abrams received her B.A. in the history and philosophy of science from the University of Chicago\, her J.D. from the University of Michigan\, and a diploma in international law from the Escuela Libre de Derecho in Mexico City. She has worked on science and technology policy for the Ford Foundation\, the U.S. Congress\, and foreign and state governments. She is also a writer whose work has appeared in journals\, newspapers\, and magazines\, such as The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists\, Environment\, California Lawyer\, and Science and Global Security.\n\nLocation\: Stevenson Science Center 4327 (Google map of this location)
