Philip Dikeman presents a wide-ranging program of flute music, from classic to cutting-edge. The earliest work is J.S. Bach’s Sonata in B minor for Flute and Harpsichord, widely believed to be the composer’s loveliest — and most challenging — works for flute. A pair of mid-century pieces follows: Ernst von Dohnányi’s 1958 Aria for Flute and Piano, and Bohuslav Martinů’s 1944 Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano. The modern era is represented by Thea Musgrave’s Narcissus for solo flute, and Song of the Lark, for flute and harp, by Charles Rochester Young, who will speak about the piece.
