Putin, Pussy Riot and the Art of Resistance

A round table of experts will discuss the performance group Pussy Riot and their conflict with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the combined power of church and state in post-Soviet Russia. The discussion will touch on religion, performance art, music and politics.

The round table will feature: 

Timothy Beal , Florence Harkness Professor of Religion, Case Western Reserve University;

Barbara Browning , associate professor of performance studies, Tisch School of the Arts at NYU;

Jen Gunderman , senior lecturer in music history, Blair School of Music; and

Alex Spektor , Mellon Assistant Professor of Russian, Department of German and Slavic Languages.

The discussion will be moderated by Joy H. Calico , associate professor of musicology and director of The Max Kade Center for European and German Studies at Vanderbilt.
