“Andy Warhol’s Skin Problems”
Abstract: This paper examines Warhol’s recurring, career-long preoccupation with the color-line with particular interest in how Warhol addresses the importance of media specific, aesthetic oppositions between black and white, and between black and white and color, in shaping how we come to “know,” “see,” “feel,” and “experience” racial difference.
Bio:Jonathan Flatley teaches at Wayne State University, where he was the Editor of Criticism: A Quarterly for Literature and the Arts from 2007-2012. He is the author of Affective Mapping: Melancholia and the Politics of Modernism(Harvard UP, 2008), the forthcoming Like Andy Warhol (Univ. Chicago Press), and co-editor of Pop Out: Queer Warhol (Duke University Press, 1996).
