The Veggie Project is a summer program that aims to address issues of childhood obesity, family nutrition and food security issues in Nashville's underserved communities. Specifically, four Boys and Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee (BGCMT) and their surrounding communities will participate and benefit from the program this summer.
Veggie Markets:
Boys and Girls Club of Middle Tennessee locations:
Tuesdays: Preston Taylor
Wednesdays: Vine Hill
Thursdays: Thompson Lane
Fridays: Andrew Jackson
Markets end Friday, Aug. 8
The Veggie Project will be implementing Farmers Markets at each of the BGCMT this summer in an effort to bring the healthiest, freshest, local produce to the communities each week! While the project works with local farmers to get the best products available, the youth of the BGCMT are responsible for managing the markets. The youth determine the volume of produce available at each market and set the prices for the fruits and vegetables. All profits from the markets go to the BGCMT. Furthermore, any leftover food is donated to local organizations and agencies such as homeless shelters, drug rehab centers and elderly homes.
