Miss Znerold, 2005
DVD Projection
Collection of Gigi and Carl Grimstad, Nashville

One of today's leading practitioners of new media art, the Los Angeles-based artist Jennifer Steinkamp creates projections in which animated fields of colorful shapes ripple and undulate in patterns that translate the sensation of phenomena such as wind, waves, and light into visually intoxicating, vertigo-inducing environments. The artist considers her work to be a means of integrating painting, video, and installation art to induce "a physical state of pleasure."

Miss Znerold is one of several computer animations she has produced showing trees in a lyrically transformative sequence of shapes and colors. In this work, branches alternately lift up and droop down, indicating that the tree is either moving in response to the wind, or engaging in a rhythmic passage of tension and relaxation. The leaves' rapidly changing colors suggest that seasonal transitions are occurring over a period of minutes rather than months. The title honors Steinkamp's first-grade teacher, who once congratulated her for making the best sponge trees in the entire class.
