Tennessee Rep is one of two Tennessee theatre companies to obtain production rights for this spellbinding and expertly written play by Shanley (Best Original Screenplay Oscar, Moonstruck). Set in a Catholic grammar school in 1964 at the time of Vatican II reforms, the plot focuses on the possible misbehavior of Father Flynn. He is a popular and more contemporary spiritual leader than Sister Aloysius, the indefatigable school principal who doubts his moral character. Once her doubts are set in motion, an explosive cat-and-mouse game ensues between the two. Is she on a witch hunt or is her continued probing justified by new information? Their confrontations will keep you on the edge of your seat. Is Father Flynn a pedophile? Is Sister Aloysius a zealot or is her crusade justified? What do you think? Do you have a shadow of a doubt? "All the elements come invigoratingly together like clockwork in John Patrick Shanley's provocative new play -- a gripping story of suspicion cast on a priest's behavior that is less about scandal than about fascinatingly nuanced questions of moral certainty." - Variety "ÂÂ…an inspired study in moral uncertainty with the compellingly certain structure of an old-fashioned detective drama." - The New York Times Appropriate Audience: High school and above. No Late Seating.
