The Parthenon is pleased to present the paintings of Victoria Boone in the West Gallery. A Nashville artist, Boone has been working in the studio for thirty years. She holds a B.F.A. in Painting & Sculpture and a MA in Museum Administration. Boone creates paintings filled with a fabricated, personal language of signs and symbols arranged within a grid paradigm.

The origins of this body of work lie in Boone's teenage diaries, in which she substituted pictograms for characters in order to maintain secrecy. Boone has developed these symbols over the years and incorporates them into her current work. More recent inspiration has come from various philosophical and scientific theories, including string theory. Workshops investing this model of physics will accompany the exhibition, and a teacher packet, Introduction to String Theory, is available at www.parthenon.org

Curator Susan Shockley says, "Victoria Boone's abstract paintings synthesize the changing evolution of letters through time and the idea of matter as constantly moving. Yet, each painting evokes a strikingly old style, because the marks she makes look so familiar -- like alphabets of old."
